uck Weaver was one of baseball's top third baseman in 1919. For the season, Buck hit a respectable .296, collected 169 hits and had 75 RBI's. His regular season salary was $6,000.

Prior to the start of the 1919 World Series, teammate Ed Cicotte asked Buck if he wanted in on something, fixing the World Series. Buck's reply was "You're crazy; That can't be done." But as the fix went forward, Buck would be present in two meetings in which the throwing of the World Series was being discussed.

Even though several members of his team were not playing on the level during the 1919 World Series, Buck's

 

determination and work ethic shined. In the Series, Buck batted .324 and did not commit an error defensively.

When the Black Sox scandal was exposed in 1920, it was determined that Buck Weaver was the only Black Sox player not to receive money for the fixing of the 1919 World Series. The star third baseman would be permanently suspended for having knowledge of the fix and failing to report it to team officials.

In 1954 Buck was interviewed by author James T. Farrell and spoke about his banishment. "A murderer even serves his sentence and is let out-I got life. I never threw a ballgame in my life. All I knew was win. That's all I know. I can't do nothin' about it."
