Well over eighty years have passed since the 1919 World Series took place, but because of the mystery that still surrounds the scandal, the legend of Shoeless Joe Jackson, along with the lifetime banishments handed down by Commissioner Landis, there remains an interest in the Black Sox story.
Because questions like "Could the fix have been prevented?" and "Were the players punished too harshly while others not enough?" remain unanswered, baseball's darkest chapter has yet to close completely.
Today, visitors can travel to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and view a large collection of Black Sox memorabilia including Joe Jackson's spikes and mitt as well as a ball used in the 1919 World Series. In addition to these items, the Hall of Fame has a number of memorandums dated 1919-1921that pertain to the Black Sox Scandal. However, these documents are restricted and not available for viewing by the general public. It is perhaps within these documents that lie the unanswered questions to this scandal.
n 1963, Eloit Asinof's "Eight Men Out" became the first major publication to write about the Black Sox Scandal. Twenty-five years later, a movie by the same name was released. Since then a number of publications, documentaries and websites have retold and reexamined the events of October 1919.
