Wednesday, October 1: Before the start of Game 1, Joe Jackson asks Manager Kid Gleason to remove him from the starting lineup. Jackson's request is denied. In the bottom of the first inning, Ed Cicotte hits Reds leadoff batter Morrie Rath, signalling that the fix was on. In New York, Arnold Rothstein places $100,000 on the Reds to win the Series after learning that the fix is officially on. |
Wednesday, October 1: (continued) GAME 1: The Reds defeat the White Sox 9-1. Later that evening, White Sox manager Kid Gleason went to Charles Comiskey to discuss rumors of a World Series fix. Suspicious that a fix was occurring, Comiskey then went to N.L. President John Heydler and A.L. President Ban Johnson. Johnson told Comiskey that his claims are "the yelp of a beaten cur." |
Thursday, October 2: Chick Gandil and Lefty Williams approach Attell, Burns and Maharg demanding $20,000. The players were told they would not receive any money until Game 2 was over. GAME 2: The Reds defeated the White Sox 4-2. During the game, a conversation took place in a luxury box between Charles Comiskey and N.L. President John Heydler. Heydler advised Comiskey that Ban Johnson dismissed the information of a possible fix "with a sneering remark." | Thursday, October 2: (continued) After the game, Burns went to Attell's room to collect $40,000 for the players. He would only receive $10,000 which he left in Gandil's room. It was also after Game 2 of the World Series that White Sox secretary Harry Grabiner notified John Heydler of a possible fix via telephone. Grabiner said that Heydler would bring it to Ban Johnson's attention and promised to get back to Grabiner on the matter. |
Friday, October3: Before the start of Game 3, Burns and Gandil meet. Burns wanted to know what the players were planning for Game 3. Gandil stated "If we can't win for Cicotte or Williams, we're not gonna win for a busher" (referring to starting pitcher, rookie Dickie Kerr.) Burns and Maharg then bet all their money on the Reds to win Game 3. GAME 3: Dickie Kerr and the White Sox defeat the Reds, 3-0. |
Saturday, October 4: Gandil meets with Sullivan and demands $20,000 before Games 4 and 5 or the fix is off. Sullivan raises $20,000 before Game 4 and gives it to Gandil. GAME 4: The Reds defeated the White Sox, 2-0. After the game, Gandil gave Felsch and Risberg $5,000 each. He gave Williams $10,000 and instructed Williams to give half to Jackson. |
Sunday, October 5: Game 5 of the World Series was postponed due to rain. It was rescheduled to be played the following day. |
Monday, October 6: GAME 5: The Reds defeat the White Sox, 5-0. When Sport Sullivan fails to show up and provide the promised $20,000, the Sox players decided the fix was over. They were now determined to win. |
Monday, October 6: (continued) Both teams head back to Cincinnati for Games 6 and 7. On the trip, Ed Cicotte and Lefty Williams had a conference. They admitted to each other that they had been double crossed and if there was any chance, that they were now going out to win. |
Tuesday, October 7: GAME 6: The White Sox defeated the Reds, 5-4. |
Wednesday, October 8: GAME 7: The White Sox defeated the Reds, 4-1. With a large amount of money on the Series and the White Sox now winning, Arnold Rothstein ordered the White Sox to lose. The order was given to Sport Sullivan who relayed it to a member of the Chicago mob. |
Wednesday, October 8: (continued) At approximately 7:30 p.m., Lefty Williams was on his way home from dinner and was stopped by a member of the Chicago mob. Lefty was given instructions to lose Game 8 by the first inning or he would be placing his and his wife's saftey in danger. |
Thursday, October 9: GAME 8: After making only 14 pitches in the top of the first inning, Lefty Williams had given up 4 runs. With only 1 out in the inning, Williams was replaced. The White Sox would lose the game 10-5. Between 7:00-8:00 p.m., Williams arrived at the Lexington Hotel to deliver Jackson his money. In Jackson's room, Lefty "threw the money down" and told Jackson that they had just been double crossed by Abe Attell. |
Saturday, October 11: Sport Sullivan and "Brown" (Nat Evans) went to the Hotel Congress and retrieved the $40,000 which had been placed in the Hotel's safe. The money was given to Chick Gandil for distribution. In his hotel room, Gandil gave Swede Risberg $10,000 while Fred McMullin received $5,000. Chick Gandil's share was $35,000. |
Saturday, October 11: (continued) Joe Jackson took his $5,000 to Charles Comiskey's office hoping to speak with his boss. After waiting 2 hours, Jackson was told by team secretary Harry Grabiner "We know what you want. Take the money and go home Joe." Unable to speak to Comiskey, Joe Jackson left and went home to Savanna, Georgia. |
