hick Gandil will forever be remembered as the ringleader of the Black Sox. Fellow Black Sox teammate, Eddie Cicotte once labeled Gandil the "Master of Ceremonies" for his lead role in the fixing of the 1919 World Series. Gandil had not only initiated and organized the fix with gamblers two weeks before the start of the World Series, he was also responsible for recruiting and paying the players involved in the fix.

During the regular season of 1919, Chick's salary was $4,000. He batted a solid .290, had 128 hits and 60 RBI's.

 

For his part in throwing the World Series, Chick earned $35,000.

After the 1919 World Series, Chick moved to California and by many accounts, spent money quite freely. At the start of the 1920 season, Chick asked White Sox owner Charles Comiskey for a $1,000 raise. Once denied, Chick retired from professional baseball.

In a 1956 Sports Illustrated interview, Chick Gandil admitted that the 1919 World Series had been fixed, but claimed that the White Sox loss to the Reds was "pure baseball fortune."
