The only scoring came in the Reds fifth inning. Pitching to Pat Duncan with one out, Eddie Cicotte fielded a ground ball and threw wildly past first base, allowing Duncan to reach second base. Larry Kopf singled to left field. Joe Jackson's throw to the plate had the runner beat, but Cicotte deflected the ball which allowed the runner to score. The play was Cicotte's second error of the inning. Earl Neale then doubled to left, scoring Kopf. The White Sox collected a total of 3 hits, 2 walks and 2 hit batsmen against winning pitcher Jimmy Ring. Eddie Cicotte suffered his second loss in the Series. After the game, White Sox manager commented about Eddie Cicotte's performance in Game 4: "Once more, luck favored the Reds. They would never have scored on Cicotte if it hadn't been for his own two errors. Cincy didn't hit him half as hard as Ring was hit. Cicotte threw his own game away....it was nothing but hard luck that beat the White Sox I don't believe that all the luck of the Series can be on one side." |
