singled to center, scoring both runners. The Sox added a run in the fourth inning when Swede Risberg tripled and scored on a bunt single by catcher Ray Schalk. Dickie Kerr picked up the win while Ray Fisher suffered the loss. The following day the New York Times had this to say about Dickie Kerr: "Not so long ago Dicky Kerr was a professional boxer out in Milwaukee. He was a bantam and could take a beating and give one. Instead of a wild lefthander shaking with stage fright in the face of Redland troupe, Kerr looked them over with nerves of chilled steel." As a footnote, in the 1920's both Dickie Kerr and Ray Fisher quit baseball over contract disputes. For quitting, both players were banished from professional baseball by Commissioner Landis. In August 1925, Kerr was reinstated and returned to the White Sox for the remainder of the season. Ray Fisher was reinstated by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn in 1980. |
